I have drawn and painted since childhood. Art was my favoured subject at school which may have influenced my career path into building surveying and architectural design. Happiest when outside in the countryside or at the coast ‘surveying’ the sights, absorbing the atmosphere and watching how the weather changes the light and scenery. I am self-taught but in 1991 I joined ‘Winthorpe Art Group’ tutored by Maxwell Neale where I continue to attend weekly to develop my watercolour painting and drawing skills.
I have persevered with watercolours and have not ventured into oils or acrylics because I like the transparent effects achievable and the fact that this medium dries quickly allowing an overlay or completion. I use masking fluid and inks to bring detail into my work. Having previously mentioned ‘I did not venture into acrylics’, I do make use of professional quality white acrylic for highlights and overlay as per the barn owl above.
