Chris Goddard

Blue glove - Chris Goddard

Quite a while back in the 19080s and 90s I was an editorial photographer covering portrait, documentary and travel work for the likes of The Observer, The Guardian, News International, Woman Magazine, Time Out and Times Educational Supplements. I also worked on long term photographic contracts for The Nursing Times, and The Museums Association. During this period I also produced my own work which has been exhibited widely throughout the UK in group and one person shows.

At the end of the 90s the internet began to eat into the print media market – I could see what was coming! Noticing the slow creep and falling opportunities, I decided to leave London and move back to my home town of Lincoln.

Fortunately, I landed on my feet and eventually spent 15 years managing the University of Lincoln’s online media and website from the Marketing and Communications Department.

Then… I retired early to go back photography on my terms. “Jerusalem“, my first project took five years to complete, but in a way is still ongoing with several other projects through my blog. You can see Jerusalem here.

A smaller spin off project, “Fantasy Island” can be seen here.

Recent work

Quite a lot of my personal photographs have hidden stories (meta-narratives) which casual observers might miss. So, as a break from the documentary genre I have started adding text to the images in the form of poetry; haiku or senryu in most cases to be precise.

This adds another dimension, encouraging viewers to look a little closer, maybe asking questions in an effort to discover more…
